Shelf Markers
These are shelf markers, or shelf dummies. They would be (and still are!)
placed on the shelf to let patrons know the book they were looking for was
kept elsewhere. This was usually because the book was too large for the
shelf or it was fragile. The libraries usually make these in-house and they
vary in size and material. Some libraries use blocks of wood instead of flat
pieces of cardboard.
