The Guilford Memorial Library in Guilford, Maine is an excellent example of
how many public libraries in America grew from locally established literary
societies. In 1903, a Library Reading Club was established in Guilford,
giving way to what would become the Guilford Memorial Library in 1908
from funds and land donated by Andrew Carnegie and Daniel Straw,
respectively. The picture, above, dates from 1911. The building in the
foreground is the library.
