The last paragraph of the preface states:
Below is the Catalogue of the Library of Bowdoin College in Brunswick,
Maine. Written by William P. Tucker, Librarian, the date of publication is
1863.
Prior to 1900, libraries used book catalogs in order to maintain a record of
the materials held within the library. Card catalogs started being produced
after 1900.
The first two authors in the Bowdoin College Catalogue from 1863 are:
Abbadie, James and Abbas, Halli.
This work will have claims to merit only as it shall meet its
as the Library if able to furnish. Every work in the Library,
of whatever kind or size, is given its place in the Catalogue.
labor it has cost. It is not free from errors and imperfections,
and of these no one can be more fully aware than the compiler.
I have prepared it mostly alone, in such hours as were left
as an Instructor. I bring it to a close with the hope only, that
my labor has not been in vain.
The images above and below show the impressive size of the Bowdoin
Catalogue. The book measures 9 ½ X 6 X 2 ½ inches.
Please see the Preservation page to see how Bowdoin College created a
box to house and help preserve the catalog.
