The illustration above is from the Pictorial Library Primer, by Mrs. Winifred
Lemon Davis. It was published in 1944 by Demco Library Supplies. The
primer was meant to be used as a manual in libraries that perhaps would
not have a trained full-time librarian. This image represents what is to be
done before an item is put into circulation. The top half of the illustration
shows how to properly open a book for the first time in order to ensure its
longevity in circulation.
The bottom half of the illustration shows where to put the mark of the
library. This primer explains that this can be done with a rubber stamp, an
embosser, or a perforater. The stamp of ownership should appear on “the
title page, an arbitrarily selected page, such as twenty-five, on important
plates, illustrations and maps, but in such a way that they are not defaced,”
(Davis, 4).
The image above is an embosser from the Wichita Museum of Art Library.
This would be used to emboss ownership on any of the items illustrated in
the Pictorial Library Primer. The image below is how the embosser appears
on paper.
Thank you to Lois Crane for sending the embosser from the Wichita Art Museum Library!
