Termatrex Indexing
Termatrex indexing used a non-computerized machine to index items. Click
here to view a short film about the Termatrex indexing system. The film
was made in 1992 by a University of South Carolina student as an
independent study. The narrator is Dr. Bob Williams, distinguished
professor emeritus. The film explains how the pre-computerized system of
retrieval worked.
Notched card indexing is a type of cataloging that has a card for each
document. A notched card, below, has edge holes for each characteristic of
the document. The broken holes denote relevant items, and the relevant
items fall or drop out. The “false drop” is when a card accidentally slips out
even though it is not necessarily relevant.
The images above are cards used in the Termatrex system. The headings of
these cards are “Cotton” and “Weaving” (seen in the top left corner). Each
hole in the card represents an item relating to the card’s heading. Materials
pertaining to both “Cotton” and “Weaving” would have corresponding
holes, which can be seen when the cards are placed one on top of the other.
