Cutter Table
Started in 1880, Cutter’s Expansive Classification scheme was one of his
most important contributions to library cataloging. It uses letters and
numbers to order materials. The Library of Congress uses
some of  the
numeric portion of the Cutter system as part of their cataloging system.

The Cutter Numbers were used to alphabetize, and the Cutter Table helps
put items in order and can be used with any classification system.

The image above shows a portion of the numbers assigned to certain names
beginning with D and F.
