A well-crafted index improves the utility of any book.
Book reviewers look for quality indexes as part of their
evaluative process. Lack of an index or a poorly
designed index can diminish sales of your book.
Most publishers require the author to supply an index
and many authors choose to do their own. This is
risky business. Authors are especially close to their
topics. Although this may make them the ultimate
expert on the content of their books, it makes it difficult
to see the text through the eyes of those new to it.
Indexers are especially attuned to considering the
reader in developing an index. We design the index to
serve both those who have already read the book and
those who haven't, those who are browsing and those
looking for specific things they remember reading.
A skilled indexer looks at your work with one purpose in
mind, to increase its utility for the reader. They help
you, the author, inform the reader by providing
additional entries to your text. They use thesauri and
other tools to provide links from synonyms to your text.
They look for topics that show up in different parts of
the work and bring this together into organized index
listings.
And, of course, indexers know indexing. They are
adept at applying standard indexing styles and
complying with publisher requirements. They own
specialized indexing software that enhances their ability
to maintain consistency in complex indexes. And they
enjoy indexing for its own sake.
Investing in a professionally produced index may be the
best investment you can make in your book.
